Obesity statistics and how to lose weight fast

I was looking at the obesity statistics the other day and was so shocked. To me it was never a problem and I think I figured out why so I decided to share my 'how to lose weight fast' solution.

Let's look at the the statistics first.

Obesity statistics for US

Two thirds of US adults (20 years or more) are obese or overweight.

Obese adults: 133.6 million (66 percent)
Women: 65 million (61.6 percent)
Men: 68.3 million (70.5 percent)

Two thirds! I couldn't believe that number (data based on NHANES 2001 to 2004).

Here is the obesity statistics chart by ages and years.

There is nothing that I can see but a steady climb over the past 20-30 years.

My simple 'how to lose weight' solution

First I am not an expert on this matter and this is based purely on my personal experience.

I have never been overweight in my life. Even when I was really trying to (eating tremendously and doing nothing) the most I could get my body weight up was 82 kg (about180 pounds) and it lasted for very short time.

Two basic facts are clear. Excessive weight comes from two sources - food and lack of activity (burning that food). Now it is also clear that in order to lose weight you have to either decrease the amount of food or increase the amount of activity - preferably both.

What I was doing subconsciously whole my life was the former - decreasing amount of food eaten every meal. Now don't let me wrong. I love food. I am true food lover and I enjoy eating all kinds of food. But, here comes the secret sauce.

Ever since I was a little child I learned to drink water while eating. Not after lunch like everyone else, but I always need to drink at least a glass of water during the lunch. The heavier the meal is (read: the more fat factor it carries) the greater need for water I naturally have. If the water is not available I do not continue with the meal (it becomes too heavy for me to eat, digest or whatever).

And all that water makes you feel full long before you would be if you were not drinking it. And that's it. The water fills your stomach instead of food and you are full anyway. I would usually drink anywhere form one glass to two glasses of water and that's almost half a liter.

I actually looked it up in Google and lot of places seem to confirm this theory of mine.

  • Drinking water enhances fat loss
  • Combat ailments by drinking more water
  • Drinking water can reduce hunger
  • Look younger - drinking water hydrates your skin
  • Drinking water speeds up the metabolism

All good things. I have only found in one place that drinking cold water during lunch could ruin your digestion, but that's something I also never did on my own - I learned cold water during eating makes me feel very unpleasant.

There you go. I hope this can help someone.

No more food chains after I have watched the documentary film Super Size me. And I read several articles about obesity in the web, and there are people who died of cardiac arrest and many other complications.

And I do not want to be vain, but I really do get sad whenever I look into the mirror and all I could see is my saggy self. It is also hard to have a girl when you are obese.

So I studied nutrition in the web, find some readings, and I followed the advice of the experts and it worked.

I have a girlfriend now, and we regularly go to the gym, and we eat healthy foods and I could say that my life is way different now than before.

I know that becoming fit is not the absolute answer for a person to be happy, but we all know that it is a major key...

Such simple solutions yet we forget that the basic good old water can help us go a long way. thank you for the remainder.

It really is basic common sense isn't it? Eat less and exercise more.
I for one re-discovered a love for cycling. having not been on a bike for 20 years, I had a go on my daughters and thought wow! I can do this. Now we cycle everywhere and the weight is falling off.
    Thanks for the inspiration.

Drinking water is a huge part of being healthy. Most of us are in a constact state of low grade dehydration. Definitely being properly hydrated is a key to feeling your best, looking your best etc.

Yes, drinking water is a secret sauce and most any weight loss specialist would agree with you. Although there are some who would argue that water should not be mixed with food, but they are not in the weight loss business and have their own agendas regarding optimizing health.

But mealtimes is not the only time overweight people eat--they often snack between meals or even late at night. It has a lot to do with how they handle the emotional stress and yes, perhaps they would cut down on the amount of food they snack on if they drank water, but there's generally no need for them to take a drink with a candy bar unless it's a soda and then they drink diet soda which makes them gain weight.

    Hi Vladimir,

Sounds like a very effective habit you got into when you were younger! And of course, it's a double whammy, because water is essential for good health anyway.

I stand corrected, I always mixed up the two.

I don't mean to be a nit-picker, but you are using the word "loose" which is an adjective meaning "not tight" or "unhindered" when you mean to use "lose" the verb which means "to shed" or "to get rid of".
