When I was a kid, good movies were in abundance. A lot less of movies were made and the stories ran at a much slower pace. In turn they induced much more emotion than today’s movies, which try to achieve that wrongly with special effects and shocking stories. I do not know what happened over the years, did I just get older or the world is not as creative as it once been. So I decided to dedicate a page here that I will fill over time with great movies, I feel are enriching the world.

I will start with just a few but with your help will eventually fill it with a sensible selection. There are only two conditions for a movie to get on this list. Be a movie that leaves me emotional and a movie I’d want to watch again. I will divide it by genres so that everyone can find what they are looking for.

Comedy and Romance recommendations

Love Actually (2003)

love_actually-comp_rgb.jpgFollows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely and interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.

Eight beautiful stories with a strong message of love, this remains one of my favorite movies in new millennium.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)

christmas_vacation.jpg The Griswold family’s plans for a big family Christmas predictably turn into a big disaster.

A classical comedy from 1980’s. The spirit of Christmas together with great actors makes it a very enjoyable and easy going movie. These kind of movies only existed in what you can call now happy eighties.

Dirty Old Scounderls (1988)

dirty_rotten_scoundrels.jpgLawrence and Freddie are con-men; big-time and small time respectively. They unsuccessfully attempt to work together only to find that this town (on the French Mediterranean coast) ain’t big enough for the two of them. They agree to a “loser leaves” bet. The bet brings out the best/worse in the two.

Great movie with Michael Caine and Steve Martin one of the best duos on the big screen I’ve seen. This is movie making at it’s best.

Blast from the Past (1999)

blast_from_the_past.jpg A romantic comedy about a naive man who comes out into the world after being in a nuclear fallout shelter for 35 years.

Very interesting story coupled with ever-inspiring Christopher Walken and childish Brendan Fraser make it truly a worth-while watch. The scene when Brendan’s character sees the ocean for the first time in his life is priceless.

Alien & Aliens (1979)

alien.jpgWhen a mining ship lands on a planet to investigate upon a suspected SOS, the entire crew are unaware of the terror which they would unleash upon their ship. When a alien life-form attach’s itself to the face of crew member, Kane, the rest of the team act fast to try and separate the two organisms. Unbeknownst to everyone, this is the start of the terror which would affect every member of the seven person crew.

Has it been so long sine the first Alien? 29 years. Dear God. Still this is one of the movies (and the sequel too) not to miss.  Intens, dramatic, scary and a true SF Alien is a classic.

Predator 1 & 2 (1987)

predator.jpgDutch (Schwarzenegger) and a small group of commandos and sent by the CIA to a Central American Jungle, to rescue capture airmen from Guerillas. But it’s not the armed terrorists which are the problem. Something hidden in the jungle, something invisible to the naked eye, something not of this earth is the problem. As Dutch and his men had back to transport, they are slowly targeted one by one.

If Alien was good in outer space, Predator brings same intense action to our planet. Arnold is brilliant in the role of a commando squad leader, fighting 1 vs 1 with predator in the battle of us vs aliens..

Star Wars Episodes 4, 5 and 6 (1977)

starwars.jpgPrincess Leia is held hostage by the evil Imperial forces in their effort to take over the Galactic Empire. Venturesome Luke Skywalker and dashing Captain Han Solo team together with the lovable robotic duo, R2-D2 and C-3PO, to rescue the beautiful princess and restore justice in the Empire.

Who haven’t watched the original Star Wars movies probably wasn’t born in 20-th century. One of the setting stones of the SF genre and a huge fan population speak enough when the series in question.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001)

lotr.jpgIn ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-Earth still it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell, by chance, into the hands of the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. On his eleventy-first birthday, Bilbo disappeared, bequeathing to his young nephew, Frodo, the Ruling Ring, and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-Earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.

Based upon a masterpiece by J.R.R. Tolkien director Peter Jackson brought the world we wanted to see. Shot in the beautiful landscapes of New Zealand it brings us ever closer to the fantasy world of elves, hobbits, dwarves and man.
