    @Tristan chapman:

My favorite part about your "spelling nazi" rant is that you misspelled Google, unless there's some "goggle images" service that I'm unaware of.

The ignorance of the children commenting on this website is atrocious. That picture is of Iceland, which anyone could tell by observing its shape. All of these photos have been generated by goggle earth, meaning any of them that show the earth from a distance farther than low orbit are computer generated images. which is why Iceland is a very cold, mountainous place, and is covered in ice in the winter. Much of the country is covered by volcanic ash and there is little foliage that is visible from high altitude even when it is photographed in the summer.

People seem to have spelled words incorrectly, such as anonymous and absolutely. This is revolting. There is also a little shit who seems to think that Global warming is a "scam" This is the worst bit of deception on the entire page.

I love the pictures, and a lot of the comments have given me a good laugh. The place everyone keeps calling Greenland looks an awful lot like Iceland to me, at least on the maps I have, but then again maybe those are "fake" too. I do believe Vladimir got it right though. ;) Thank you by the way for posting these, and the other pictures too; they are amazing photos!! And I would hope that people could appreciate the beauty of Nature, and yes the beauty of mankind, we're not all bad. Mankind doesn't just destroy, but create, and if I'm not mistaken Mother Nature does the same, what a coincidence! :)

    beautiful pictures

    and about iceland and greenland

Yep, that image is definitely of Iceland. Nice pics.

Well a comment on the Iceland Greenland thing.

The reason for the names are that vikings went out on a raid. they found Iceland (at wintertime) and hence they called it Iceland. Greenland was discovered the year after in the summer and they struck land far south. there was green so therefore Greenland. Just like the reason for Indians in America.

So, to those of you who are bitching about America using so much light and shit... check out Japan. I'm pretty sure the comparison of light to size proves Japan's light usage exceeds ours.

Also, get over it. Posting on a forum isn't going to make the earth any greener or these pictures any more real or fake (whichever side you're on). If any of you fuck faces gave a shit, you'd be over in Africa hooking up their power. But I suppose your "over lit" America with Laz-e Boy chairs and laptop Macs is too comfortable to risk.

Keep right on posting, but remember: you guys are doing nothing but making some other person on another computer a little flustered.

    They are not fake

    Neither are they photographs.

These are images generated from equipment designed to identify and capture static lights around the globe for 'research' purposes. There are very few man made things which can be observed from space with the naked eye.

So they DO represent the extent of lights around our planet but nobody has ever seen this.

However, to say they are fake is not realistic - if this were so then almost all astronomical photos would also be fake as they rely on long exposures and the capture of electromagnetic radiation from all parts of the non-visible spectrum.

It is however sad that these images are in wide circulation without any credits or explanation and hence misleading many people.

    We’re no strangers to love,

I think it's sad that EVERYONE on here is moaning about photoshop, editing, green peace, the environment, their own sanity and all things irrelevant. You either enjoy the pics or you don't. One "night shot" shows the topography of the ocean floor. Obviously a composite! Another one shows the entire northern hemisphere in darkness. What time of year would this happen?

If you don't think these are fake then shame on you!

  55. Octopoid
    Jul 10th, 2008

Actually the lights that we constantly see on Earth images here and elsewhere on the internet are fake. They are representative of the populations of our planet but from space the city's lights are simply too insignificant to be visible! At least to the extent that they are depicted here.

Most of these images are composited from a combination of satellite images and computer generated imagery based on demographic data.

  56. Tarrith DoUrden
    Jul 10th, 2008

FYI, the night shots I do believe are screenshots of a screensaver called Cities of Earth 3d with all the text info turned off.

All the rest are satellite pictures from Nasa.
    i.e. http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_32.html

*Sigh* Ok, let me re-focus. I do apologize for hijacking here as well; I also, though somewhat begrudgingly, apologize for getting a little worked up there. I just hate seeing folks get in that "humans are parasites" mode. I find it incredibly hypocritical.

Now, you're missing my point entirely if you think you should get all warm and fuzzy looking at these pictures, fake or not. I just think it's a little pretentious contorting some pictures into some pessimistic propaganda.

Congrats on your 4-banger. Props on going with the bike every now and then. And I'm sure you're well received with your friends at GetUp! Unfortunately, I live in a culture that is not as receptive to change. Moreover, I live in the Energy Capitol of the US, and we love our oil here. There are more refineries than you can possibly imagine, and it's positively depressing. And yes, I donate to Greenpeace, support the Green party, and eat green vegetables as often as possible. I'm just all about the green, really. But I don't get all apocalyptic with it. Yeah, you gushed over these computer generated pictures just like you accused everyone else of doing. You just did it in a negative way. "Take a closer look. What you see should make you all ill and somewhat afraid." That kinda says it all, doesn't it...

Listen, man, no hard feelings. You want to be all gung-ho about environmental reform, more power to you. But people that are stuck up, pretentious, and frankly think their sh*t doesn't stink just infuriate me. Sorry, chief, I calls 'em likes I sees 'em.

  60. Tarrith DoUrden
    Jul 4th, 2008

Well isn't there some hackles being raised in here. Yes indeed there is...Well, bring it on.

Excuse me for not gushing over some computer generated pictures of our planet. What was I thinking not going all pink and tingly all over just looking at them? Let me see if I can change my pessimistic attitude.

Hmmm, yes I do have a four cylinder people mover for my family and my personal transport for getting to and from work is a twin cylinder motorbike. Unless I opt for walking or a push bike, I consider this quite economical under the current circumstance.

But now, if I was a hippie that lived in the basement of my Mom's solar powered house, would you give my point of view more respect or would you continue to disregard my opinion with your childish insults? No I don't think it would change your attitude at all.

To make a difference, now THAT'S something worth ranting about.
Making a difference. Most of us would like to. Most of us wont, hell let's face it. Even if I did petition my state of federal government to support more renewable energy, do you think it would make a difference?

No it would not. Governments do what governments want to do, with the influence of money and power.

I have the power of one, all you people have the power of many, the same power that has such a devastating affect on our plant and our environment.

Oh by the way. I am a member of GetUp!
    http://www.getup.org.au/

Or are you going to try and insult me for that too?

    Yours,

    Tarrith Do'Urden

    @ Tarrith Do’Urden

Jesus, get over yourself! Do you honestly think you're busting my idealist bubble? It's the hypocrisy in what you say. Bitching about our overuse of electrity as you're sitting there in your mom's basement just lets us know exactly how much of a loser you really are. A little pretentious, are we?

Hey, got a car? Even if it's a hybrid, you're still the enemy you keep whining about. What about electrity in your house? Well, unless you've got a solar panel on your roof or a wind turbine in your back yard, you ought to shut your hole. Practice what you preach, hippie.

Want to actually make a difference instead of crying about it on some poor guy's blog? Petition your state and federal governments to support more renewable resources. Or if you have a little extra money lying around, sponsor research in hydrogen cell technology. But don't sit here on your high horse and preach to me, chief.

    @LurkerJune 28th, 2008 at 19:37

"Can I just mention that Tarrith DoUrden is obviously a one-off of Tyler Durden from the book/movie Fight Club"

Well you could, but you would be wrong. Though I do enjoy the movie Fight Club, my online persona is not based on this particular character. Rather it is this one.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drizzt_Do%27Urden

But to truly understand you would have to use your brain by reading the books.

Now for those who tell me to pull my head in. Let's zoom in on this pretty blue planet of ours.

This is an area of our planet unsullied by much of the human population.

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&view=map&q=jericho&sll=-37.655558,146.521912&sspn=0.821944,1.73584&ie=UTF8&ll=-37.637072,146.270599&spn=0.411075,0.86792&t=k&z=11

This is an are that has sparse human population.

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&view=map&q=wyalong&ie=UTF8&ll=-33.925699,147.242889&spn=0.430732,0.86792&t=k&z=11

Do a search for any major city and you will see just how bad we can get as a species.

Did anyone notice the pixelisation that happens to our pretty blue planet? See, all those pretty little squares is a property. A paddock or field. Which get's sub-divided as the population grows. And when an area get supersaturated, the green color fades to gray dead concrete.

Would you like me to unplug my machine? Yes I'm sure that would rest easier on some of you people's conscience if I did stop posting these nasty things that impinge on your cosy little reality.

    Tough.

The pictures aren't photoshopped. A lot of them were edited by NASA, as in, different pictures of Earth were stitched together to create a picture with very little cloud cover, as is seen in the Blue Marble image http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_marble and other images of Earth. Likewise, various images were combined to create an image of the Earth in complete darkness, to show the drama of the whole world lit up. Sure, they were edited, but by NASA, not by some dude in his basement with Photoshop.

    1. @ shooped: Photoshopped or not, this is pure friggin' art. As defined by Wiktionary: "Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature." Or, as defined by one wikipedia page, "...Art is the third album from the Australian rock band, Regurgitator, released in 1999." I'll stick with the former of the two.

    2. @ Tarrith DoUrden: You are a waste of existence, just like the rest of us. Get over yourself, man. Groan...

Et. al (get it? anyone? meh...): I'm sorry, I must have missed the part where the poster informed us that these are pictures he took with his homemade satellite. At no time did he say "check out these pictures I took" or make any other claims that they were his own. Copyright infringement is an obsolete term, thanks to the blog-o-spheres and internets. I'm sure if NASA didn't want this pictures posted elsewhere, they would have done SOMETHING to prevent that from happening, ie a script disabling right click, etc. No, instead, they put they link on their site straight to the jpg. Your mom is a copyright infringement.

I think Jehovah has made the most interesting comment on here. Those little white dots really are just a representation of where the money is. Leave it up to "He that is" to tell it like it is.

And another 8 years of Bush through martial law and it will look a lot different. And all the Chinese slave labor camps on our soil will look really nice when we run out of money to pay our military.

You don't have to be a math major to see how badly a $15 trillion debt with interest will kill a republic. It's only a matter of time.

my god you people are idiots the light pictures are not fake, they are just several pictures over-layed to show what the lighting looks like for large geographical areas. What they do is take a satellite picture at 7pm Tokyo time and continue to take a pictures every hour until its midnight in Europe and overlay all the pictures, once you mess around the the lighting so that only the night time parts of the pictures are shown you get a picture apparently showing all of asia with its lights on when in fact its just a well know method of showing time lapsed photography.

While cool and beautiful, it just shows how absolutely overpopulated we are. It makes me look with awe, but all those lights are just pinpoints on how absolutely crowded we are. The sad thing is that Africa is mostly unlit when we know how populated it is as well. Pretty much these shots show exactly where the money is.

Can I just mention that "Tarrith DoUrden" is obviously a one-off of Tyler Durden from the book/movie Fight Club. Combined with his comments I believe that we must assume the guy lacks an individual personality so he is copying one that he admires. Not that I care all that much, hell it's his life not mine, but it is annoying to think that some of you seem to take his post seriously and speak to him as if he was using his real name.

Pictures are nice by the way, I think everyone is missing a point about the advancement of the human race. All else aside, it is amazing that we have created artificial satellites that send us pictures of the entire Earth when Columbus was bumbling about on a boat a few hundred years ago.

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

    Just my take. Cheers!

Everyone talks about the future weather, but so far nobody has done much about it, not even the many people and politicians conceived that climate change will be a serious problem. Global warming is an evil that is growing proportional to human progress but working against it. People are not good at making immediate sacrifices for an abstract benefit in the future, specially when they do not completely understand the problem. We have a hard time even understanding the problem or the impact of our actions today.
IT IS NO TIME THAT OUR PLANET WILL BE TRUELY BLUE. and the above pics will be even more mesmerising.

I'm really angry at StumbleUpon for directing me to sites that are simply a collection of images that someone else has copied and pasted off of the internet. This should be categorized as some form of plagiarism. I mean, can't you just SAY, for each image, "This picture is from NASA's website [see http://blah blah blah]." And then, "This picture was generated using the software Google Earth [see http, etc.]." But NO, there is no credit given anywhere, leading the unwary to conclude that the poster is correct in saying these pictures were all taken by satellites. Or that it takes some special access to NASA to find their zillions of satellite images. GRRRRR!

Nice looking pics, photoshopped, but who doesn't use it? Though I agree with many of Tarrith DoUrden's statements it would be hypocritical of me to start ranting about how much people are destroying the earth. I have to drive to work everyday, I'm sitting at my energy using computer, there is multitudes of different gadgets and gizmos throughout my home that require electricity, same as everyone else. At this time it would be quite literally impossible to live without many of our electronic toys and gas guzzling cars. We are doing the best we can as a species to correct the error of our ways and though it may not seem like it, things are getting better. Anyways, nice pictures.
Oh...and the one labeled "iceland" is actually Greenland.

I think it is great we have the knowledge of what our beautiful planet looks like as a whole.
But photoshopped or not, these pictures highlight the serious problem of light pollution. Just one issue which if tackled could move us a tiny step towards a sustainable future, before we plummet in to darkness due to overuse of fossil fuels.

I do think, however, that insulting Tarrith DoUrden by calling him/her a capitalist pig is hilarious... don't think it's quite the right ideology.

Thanks Tarrith DoUrden, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one completely dazed by the contradictions here...

All the irony showed here between the title claiming the infinite beauty of nature (which is by the way the base of my train of thought) and the pictures showing the endless crazy expansion of the greatest parasite the earth has ever known.

All I see in those night view pictures is the hypocrisy of an elite, a 20% of world wide population, living blindly in a unsustainable, hyper-egocentric lifestyle, sucking 80% of all earth resources, slobbering from every pore tons of waste that make all of us more and more closer to a point of no return. I see the triumph of the neoliberalism, a mentality that wants to recreate life at his image, to appropriate every living being, reorganize every parcels on earth by the self-proclaimed master of the earth, us and our so called knowledge.

I can't wait to see the day when this wealthy and supposedly most advanced civilization of ours will be outsmarted by nature, when we will realize that we are not the promoters of earth. We are a result of nature, our fragile organism (like others) totally rely on it. By obstructing more and more the complex mechanisms that took millions of years to build, we are the greatest predator of our own kind and most of other species. Us modern people are blinded by our technology, our cities, our heated houses. The illusion of a world made by humans for humans. First nations all around the world understood thousands of years ago that respecting their environment is the only way to survive.
I don't care if I'm a endangered specie. I don't care if I die. I'll have the satisfaction that I did all I could not to be part of this.

It's sodding ghastly. Take a closer look.

The land has been pixalised by the human race, carving the land up into small patches of various brown and grey.
The most fertile parts of the planet have have cities where humans multiply, turning fertile green to infertile grey concrete.

Even at night humans make little glowing spots on the surface. This is NOT pretty. These are NOT Christmas lights. This is is the human race using an exorbitant amount of energy to see in the dark.

I'm glad you like dust storms, once all the green has gone, there will be a lot more to appreciate.

Take a closer look. What you see should make you all ill and somewhat afraid.
