What a beautiful collection of satellite shots! Looking at the images taken at night is somewhat evocative. It reminds me of an organism covered in a skin disorder that it can't seem to shake.

I never thought pictures of the Earth would bring out such venomous comments.

Are the pictures beautiful? Yes. Are they photoshopped? Maybe. Is the environment a mess? A little. Is global warming a threat caused by humans and rising levels of CO2 and heat? Not really. Global warming is more of a scam than a real threat.

Is the environment a mess .... yes. Are these beautiful pictures .... yes.

Does it matter that their Photoshopped .... no, their still beautiful.

    Obviously, it's been photoshoped.

The arguments in the comment section are more entertaining than the actual pictures. I think it's funny how much people care about whether these pictures are doctored or not rather than appreciating their beauty.

    We’re no strangers to love,
You know the rules and so do I.
    A full commitment’s what I’m thinking of,
You wouldnt get this from any other guy.

I just wanna tell you how I’m feeling,
    Gotta make you understand…

    Never gonna give you up,
    Never gonna let you down,
Never gonna run around and desert you.
    Never gonna make you cry,
    Never gonna say goodbye,
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.

We’ve known each other for so long
    Your heart’s been aching
But you’re too shy to say it.
Inside we both know what’s been going on,
We know the game and we’re gonna play it.

Annnnnd if you ask me how I’m feeling,
Don’t tell me you’re too blind to see…

    Never gonna give you up,
    Never gonna let you down,
Never gonna run around and desert you.
    Never gonna make you cry,
    Never gonna say goodbye,
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.

Give you up. give you up.
Give you up, give you up.
    Never gonna give

    Never gonna give
Never gonna give, give you up.

I think it's sad that EVERYONE on here is moaning about photoshop, editing, green peace, the environment, their own sanity and all things irrelevant. You either enjoy the pics or you don't. Stop complaining about it if you don't and allow the rest of the internet-using society go "oooh" at the pretty pictures.

Seriously, get over your own issues and just appreciate something nice once in a while.

One "night shot" shows the topography of the ocean floor. Obviously a composite! Another one shows the entire northern hemisphere in darkness. What time of year would this happen?

If you don't think these are fake then shame on you!

  11. Octopoid
    Jul 10th, 2008

Actually the lights that we constantly see on Earth images here and elsewhere on the internet are fake. They are representative of the populations of our planet but from space the city's lights are simply too insignificant to be visible! At least to the extent that they are depicted here.

Most of these images are composited from a combination of satellite images and computer generated imagery based on demographic data.

FYI, the night shots I do believe are screenshots of a screensaver called Cities of Earth 3d with all the text info turned off.

    http://www.screenomania.com/cities-of-earth.html

All the rest are satellite pictures from Nasa.
    i.e. http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_32.html

And the first picture is "Blue Marble" composite images generated by NASA in 2001 (left) and 2002 (right). Image available at...

*Sigh* Ok, let me re-focus. I do apologize for hijacking here as well; I also, though somewhat begrudgingly, apologize for getting a little worked up there. I just hate seeing folks get in that "humans are parasites" mode. I find it incredibly hypocritical.

Now, you're missing my point entirely if you think you should get all warm and fuzzy looking at these pictures, fake or not. I just think it's a little pretentious contorting some pictures into some pessimistic propaganda.

Congrats on your 4-banger. Props on going with the bike every now and then. And I'm sure you're well received with your friends at GetUp! Unfortunately, I live in a culture that is not as receptive to change. Moreover, I live in the Energy Capitol of the US, and we love our oil here. There are more refineries than you can possibly imagine, and it's positively depressing. And yes, I donate to Greenpeace, support the Green party, and eat green vegetables as often as possible. I'm just all about the green, really. But I don't get all apocalyptic with it. Yeah, you gushed over these computer generated pictures just like you accused everyone else of doing. You just did it in a negative way. "Take a closer look. What you see should make you all ill and somewhat afraid." That kinda says it all, doesn't it...

Listen, man, no hard feelings. You want to be all gung-ho about environmental reform, more power to you. But people that are stuck up, pretentious, and frankly think their sh*t doesn't stink just infuriate me. Sorry, chief, I calls 'em likes I sees 'em.

Well isn't there some hackles being raised in here. Yes indeed there is...Well, bring it on.

Excuse me for not gushing over some computer generated pictures of our planet. What was I thinking not going all pink and tingly all over just looking at them? Let me see if I can change my pessimistic attitude.

Hmmm, yes I do have a four cylinder people mover for my family and my personal transport for getting to and from work is a twin cylinder motorbike. Unless I opt for walking or a push bike, I consider this quite economical under the current circumstance.

But now, if I was a hippie that lived in the basement of my Mom's solar powered house, would you give my point of view more respect or would you continue to disregard my opinion with your childish insults? No I don't think it would change your attitude at all.

To make a difference, now THAT'S something worth ranting about.
Making a difference. Most of us would like to. Most of us wont, hell let's face it. Even if I did petition my state of federal government to support more renewable energy, do you think it would make a difference?

No it would not. Governments do what governments want to do, with the influence of money and power.

I have the power of one, all you people have the power of many, the same power that has such a devastating affect on our plant and our environment.

Oh by the way. I am a member of GetUp!
    http://www.getup.org.au/

Or are you going to try and insult me for that too?

    Yours,

    Tarrith Do'Urden

    @ Tarrith Do’Urden

Jesus, get over yourself! Do you honestly think you're busting my idealist bubble? It's the hypocrisy in what you say. Bitching about our overuse of electrity as you're sitting there in your mom's basement just lets us know exactly how much of a loser you really are. A little pretentious, are we?

Hey, got a car? Even if it's a hybrid, you're still the enemy you keep whining about. What about electrity in your house? Well, unless you've got a solar panel on your roof or a wind turbine in your back yard, you ought to shut your hole. Practice what you preach, hippie.

Want to actually make a difference instead of crying about it on some poor guy's blog? Petition your state and federal governments to support more renewable resources. Or if you have a little extra money lying around, sponsor research in hydrogen cell technology. But don't sit here on your high horse and preach to me, chief.

"Can I just mention that Tarrith DoUrden is obviously a one-off of Tyler Durden from the book/movie Fight Club"

Well you could, but you would be wrong. Though I do enjoy the movie Fight Club, my online persona is not based on this particular character. Rather it is this one.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drizzt_Do%27Urden

But to truly understand you would have to use your brain by reading the books.

Now for those who tell me to pull my head in. Let's zoom in on this pretty blue planet of ours.

This is an area of our planet unsullied by much of the human population.

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&view=map&q=jericho&sll=-37.655558,146.521912&sspn=0.821944,1.73584&ie=UTF8&ll=-37.637072,146.270599&spn=0.411075,0.86792&t=k&z=11

This is an are that has sparse human population.

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&view=map&q=wyalong&ie=UTF8&ll=-33.925699,147.242889&spn=0.430732,0.86792&t=k&z=11

Do a search for any major city and you will see just how bad we can get as a species.

Did anyone notice the pixelisation that happens to our pretty blue planet? See, all those pretty little squares is a property. A paddock or field. Which get's sub-divided as the population grows. And when an area get supersaturated, the green color fades to gray dead concrete.

Would you like me to unplug my machine? Yes I'm sure that would rest easier on some of you people's conscience if I did stop posting these nasty things that impinge on your cosy little reality.

    Tough.

Yes merica has all the monies (but not for long kthxCHINA), and yes there are way too many babies in need of staples and trees, but really there is not enough trees for us to even staple the babies to or to pick all the monies that grow there. So why don't we all plant some trees and cry less, and then eat brains?

    holy photoshopped pictures batman!

  22. Rob
    Jun 30th, 2008

The pictures aren't photoshopped. A lot of them were edited by NASA, as in, different pictures of Earth were stitched together to create a picture with very little cloud cover, as is seen in the Blue Marble image http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_marble and other images of Earth. Likewise, various images were combined to create an image of the Earth in complete darkness, to show the drama of the whole world lit up. Sure, they were edited, but by NASA, not by some dude in his basement with Photoshop.

    @ Anon:

The US and Europe ARE the most advanced places in the world. Bits of Asia, too, like Japan and S. Korea.

Anyway, yeah, it makes sense that I'm a dick because I live in one of those places. That's called being bigoted. Thanks, dick!

Nitce how the US and Europe consume WAY more electricity than any other part of the world.. funny how the nations who would consider themselves the most adavnced don't realise that they are killing the entire planet..... thanks dicks!!
