The picture with the caption "Night arrives over Europe and Northern Africa" is obviously a fake but I see it all the time on the web. You can't see features on the bottom of the ocean from space or from a boat. It can't be done. Quit pretending like it is a real photo.

    beautiful pictures

    and about iceland and greenland
their switched for a reason, the vikings wanted to confuse their enemies by switching the names, making a green country named iceland and a ice country named greenland

hope u get what im saying

No South America? We barely see it in the last pic, but there are no shots that focus on it. Other than that, beautiful pictures. Thank you for sharing.

Yep, that image is definitely of Iceland. I know when I was in school I had a teacher who stressed to us the irony of Iceland being "green" and Greenland being covered with ice...I have since learned to disregard what teachers say unless I can verify the information through a second (or third) source.

Your "Iceland" is in fact Greenland.
    But otherwise, these are beautiful!

Very nice pictures, Vladimir. Thank you for putting them up here. They show how beautiful our "blue planet" really is but also how fragile...

    Have a great year 2009!

    Nice pics.

Well a comment on the Iceland Greenland thing.

The reason for the names are that vikings went out on a raid. they found Iceland (at wintertime) and hence they called it Iceland. Greenland was discovered the year after in the summer and they struck land far south. there was green so therefore Greenland. Just like the reason for Indians in America.

yeah Greenland is icy and Iceland is "green" but since there pretty well up there they both are pretty icy year round

I was under the impression Greenland was the icy one, and Iceland was the green one, due to Viking tricks. Am I wrong?

So, to those of you who are bitching about America using so much light and shit... check out Japan. I'm pretty sure the comparison of light to size proves Japan's light usage exceeds ours.

Also, get over it. Posting on a forum isn't going to make the earth any greener or these pictures any more real or fake (whichever side you're on). If any of you fuck faces gave a shit, you'd be over in Africa hooking up their power. But I suppose your "over lit" America with Laz-e Boy chairs and laptop Macs is too comfortable to risk.

Keep right on posting, but remember: you guys are doing nothing but making some other person on another computer a little flustered.

    They are not fake

    Neither are they photographs.

These are images generated from equipment designed to identify and capture static lights around the globe for 'research' purposes. There are very few man made things which can be observed from space with the naked eye.

So they DO represent the extent of lights around our planet but nobody has ever seen this.

However, to say they are fake is not realistic - if this were so then almost all astronomical photos would also be fake as they rely on long exposures and the capture of electromagnetic radiation from all parts of the non-visible spectrum.

It is however sad that these images are in wide circulation without any credits or explanation and hence misleading many people.
