Saying No to Digg’s new shackles

Digg has just joined the growing number of top sites that will use your content as theirs by using browser frames to show your site.

Instead of just opening a link to your site, the visitor will never leave Digg site and will see a Digg toolbar on the top of the page while actually looking at the content of your page.

Why I consider this bad:

  • The less tech-savvy visitor is fooled that all content is actually made by Digg
  • You won't even get a link in return
  • While viewing your site, Digg's site metrics actually grow because technically the user is still on the Digg site ('time on site' metric for example) which helps Digg, and not you

This WordPress plugin will automatically remove all frames imposed on your site.

Get rid of shackles, download No Frames plugin.

Isn't this somewhat similar of what Facebook is doing for part of outbound links from their service?

That's what these companies don't understand. It's true they give you a platform to share your content, but in reality if you are writing content, you are pretty much making Digg money, and they want to own your content. I gave up on Digg years ago. I work only with companies that value my work and are not too greedy.

This is a real shame. Facebook tried something like this - with the content "ownership" issue. It really blew up in their face! Hopefully the same will happen with Digg's efforts along this line.

    V,

    I agree with your point.

It is difficult to turn your back on Diggs but what they really
want is your content, traffic and revenue.

"We" are better off not helping them pick our pockets.

Unfortunately, others will also start doing it.
