Thanks for the suggestions - I'll let you know the results if they're significant. I do have a problem getting the smart update pinger to be accepted on my Wordpress.org account - any suggestions?

A very useful post which made it easier for me to use not only the correct ping addresses but the ones that are currently most useful. I like the idea of the smart update pinger too as it will cut down on the pings sent to many of the servers if you intend on editing existing posts on a regular basis. Most helpful too for realising the services that are refusing your ping requests and not wasting valuable resources.
