Using Insights

Insights increases the speed you access and present information on your site. It makes any information almost instantaneously available.

Let's say I want to link snazzy archives to my exact plugin page.

If I am not sure of the exact link to that page I would need around 1 minute to open a new window, search for this page, copy the link and paste it. With Insights everything is done in couple of seconds.

 Insights

Adding images

What if I wrote a post about mountains and wanted to insert a generic picture of a mountain:

With Insights it takes few seconds:

 Insights

What about a Video?

Easy as it can be. Find a relevant video and click Add Video!

 Insights

Google Maps

With Insights you can add real maps to your posts using Google Maps interface. You can add markers and draw paths too.

When you are satisfied, Insights will add a map image to your post.

 Insights

Wikipedia and Google

Insights also allows you to search Wikipedia and Google. Insert the links or read the articles with ease:

 Insights

Installation

1. Upload the whole plugin folder to your /wp-content/plugins/ folder.

Hi Thanks for the wonderful plugin. I love the search image feature, but I don't use flickr for images. I take my own photos and place them in a folder on my server (sometimes inside my WordPress directory, sometimes outside). I'd like to be able to browse these folders and place a thumbnail of the image with a link to a larger image.

I've seen a few people have already asked. But, do you think you will be adding the ability to search images from directors on my own blog?

I'm not a coder, even though I'd love to learn. But let me know if there is any other way I can help... donations, tester or whatever.

    Thanks, mikemike

Like all your plugins this one is very usefull. Thank you!

I have suggestion. Maybe someone already said about it...
You make search only for Flickr, but it would be very good to add Google Image Search option. On Flickr very often I can't find pic I need. Using Google I find them in 10 seconds. Adding Google Image Search feature will make this even faster and easier.

I love this plug-in but it inserts images that are licensed for use only with attribution and it does not provide an attribution. Any way to fix that?

    • Vladimir prelovac.com
      Dec 24th, 2009

Ir provides an attribution by linking to the original source which is fine with flickr. You can add more manually.

    Hey Vladimir,

Thanks for the cool plugin. I am wondering if this works for bloggers who have not even added any meta data to their posts? I am working SEO'ing on a blog with bloggers who are very new to SEO and have no meta data, so the plugin seems to not be pulling in anything.

    Please advise.

    Thank you, Vladimir.

Great plugin! Thanks for maintaining this.

    I have three suggestions:

The ability to specify the alignment for an image
The ability to have images uploaded into the user's own media library, in case the original image is removed
The ability to include the title and/or description from the image's Flickr page

Hi, it is a VERY good plugin! But i'm having one problem... when inserting the Google or News items, it is inserting the without the text between tags... so the link doesn't appear. It should look like this right... title. It's inserting without the title right now. Thx!

Vladimir, I am using this plugin on my site, and really enjoy the features. I am, however, curious if you have considered making it so that the insert map feature inserts a dynamic google map which can be zoomed in and out? Also, it would be useful if there were some way of labeling markers, as I have some maps with several markers on them. I would love to hear if you have any plans regarding these features.
    Thanks, Mark.

Thanks for the reply about the alignment of pictures, but my point is that in Wordpress, when you click on insert images, you get choices, including left, right and center. Do I have to insert code to get the pictures to align where I want them with Images? If so, where can I find out how to do that?

Hi Vera Marie. Once you have inserted a picture, or a map for that matter (since maps created by insights are also converted to images), go to your post where the image has been inserted and left click on the image. After left clicking on the image, two icons should appear and one will be for editing the image, and the other will be for deleting the image. If you click on edit image, then you will be presented with the options to align left, right, center, etc. that you are looking for. I hope this helps.

I think Insights is fantastic, and I'm telling everybody what a wonderful plug in it is. I just have one question. Is there a way that I can wrap the words around a picture? With Word, you have the choice of placing picture left, right or center, but with Insights, I have not found any way to control its location in the post.

Thanks so much for this great tool.

    As Gary Taylor noted:
"Also, it would be good if I could highlight text (as if making a hyperlink) and then have Insights make a link when I find something I want to link to (from my site, Wikipedia, Google) instead of just inserting the hyperlinked phrase [object]."
I have installed insights and I have also noticed this bug, but only when testing on internet explorer. The insert link feature works fine for me in FF and Chrome (have not tested Safari). Is there any word on when this might get addressed?

Very nice plugin! However, it would be great if it could run together with the FCKEditor plugin. I'd love to have the functionality and convenience of both tools together.

But what's much more important: it would be great to be able to configure the locations to search in more detail. My postings are for example in German, so I have no use for searching the english Wikipedia, but I'd rather need the German one. Which should just be a matter of slightly tweaking the URL you use to retreive the results. With that, it can surely be implemented the ugly way by simply changing the source code or the database entries of the plugin, but I don't want to have to do this everytime there's an update for the plugin...

I used your plug in for the Google map capability. But the previous version stopped working. I upgraded to the latest version and it interfered with my pages menu: either new pages wouldn't show up in the menu or if I changed the status of the page from published to draft - the page still appeared published. So I'm deleting your plug in for now. Hope you can fix it.

This seems as though it's going to be a useful plugin, but a little more troubleshooting would be helpful. I have uploaded it, activated it, and used it to search..no problem, went to insert a video, toggled visual to html and back, the video shows up in my post, however there's this part of the code that shows above the video 27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> I have tried reinserting using html and toggle to visual, tried putting between code/code and even tried deleting that part of the code..(it came back..lol) so any suggestions on how to get that code out besides turning the font white...

Hello there, thank you very much for this wonderful plugin!

Two ideas (you might have thought of already) :
    1) When adding a link to the post - to be able to do it in HTML editor, and not just the visual editor.
    2) To be able to add more search engines (like wikipedia in other languages and so on)

    Thanks again!

I love this plugin! The only problem I have with it is that it adds hspace=5 in the image tag and it breaks my design! I removed the attribute from the js file and everything works now. I suggest that you remove all the styling from the generated tags so that it doesn't clash with css styles.

    Otherwise this plugin is GREAT!

    Hey Vladimir,

I recently had some trouble with a blogger refusing to attribute my flickr photos that he used on his site.
He cited INSIGHTS as the problem as the your plugin had not told him that the images found/chosen were available under Creative Commons.

I made it known to the individual that he should always check (read the end comments at this post - http://thereallymobileproject.com/2009/06/nokia-n97-the-definitive-verdict-maybe ) and he still 'blamed' INSIGHTS.

More of an FYI I guess.

Here's a problem I'm having. I use insights to search images, then I copy/paste the image link into my post. I'm using the Thesis Theme, which automatically generates thumbnails for excerpts. But it doesn't seem to be able to generate thumbs from offsite images. I don't see any last most important instruction about HOW to put the search results INTO the actual post. I have clicked on the pencil icon and nothing happens. I have dragged the pencil icon into my post where I want it to appear but that only generates a dot, I have c&p'd the code from the results form into my post, and it shows up simply as unlinked and essentially code/text within the post. I am simply trying to add a text link at this point, and having no luck. It says to "use it" here in the instruction, and I have used it but there is that one step missing! Can anyone enlighten me? This plugin is really great! If you could add the options from YouTube allowing the user to specify the size of the video to embed, that would be awesome. I realize that this can be done manually in the code after the fact, but it would be far better for less experienced users if it were done from right in the plugin.

Hi there! I love the idea of this plug-in but I can't get it fully working. Using WP 2.7.1 this installs fine. I can change the settings and it shows up where it's supposed to on the Posting page. However, if I do a search using My Blog, Images, or Videos (All other aspects of the plugin work fine!) I get the following error:

Warning: require_once(/home/glaceau/wp-settings.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/glaceau/w0rdpress.conf on line 75

Now, I have pulled my wp-config file outside of my blog directory and renamed it for security purposes. In the old wp-config.php file I have:

    <?php
    require( dirname( __FILE__ ) . '/../../w0rdpress.conf' );

Every other plugin works fine but for some reason I can't get this one to work quite right.

Sorry, my english is too bad... Insights plugin is really great ! But I have a bug with my Admin Page when I write a new post : the toolbar is off when I click on "HTML" and then clik back on "Visual"...

Inisghts would be a brilliant way to implement a human moderated version of the pingcrawl plugin. Insights could search the google blog function for posts on other blogs that relate to your keywords. You could then look at the results and choose to pingback/trackback some of those posts. It -might- be good for your SEO (depending on what you think about nofollow links), but it's also a good way to get your site noticed by people (with pingbacks on other blogs) and to share links with your existing readers.

    Hi,

Top plugin and have been using for some time.

One thing I do miss is some proper doco with each plugin update outlining/summarising the feature changes or fixes.

I tend to be reluctant to upgrade something until I'm aware of what the changes actually are.

Also, your plugin is noted by the WP plugin install process as not having been tested under 2.7. I run your plugin under WP 2.7 and have not had any issues - works fine. You might like to update this at some stage.

    Regards,

I hate to tarnish a great plugin but I'm afraid video embedding doesn't work for authors. The search is fine, the gallery displays perfectly, but when you click Add Video the video object fails to appear in the editor window. Switching to HTML view reveals the HTML but when it comes to publishing the thing, the video is missing. It works perfectly for images and perfectly for the Admin user. (I've been following this idiosyncrasy for a while and was hoping it would be fixed by now).

    Any thoughts anyone?

    Pete.

It seems insight is rather buggy since the Wordpress 2.7 upgrade. Sometimes it inserts maps into my posts, but today it didn't. I tried to upgrade to the latest version, and nothing worked at all. I went back to the old version, because it was working yesterday.

    Hi,

first, I love this plug-in of yours. I just upgraded to version 1.5, and wanted to give you a quick feedback about a small glitch I've found. In line 123 of insights.php the processing instruction is indefinite - it reads just "<?" instead of "<?php". Some configurations (like mine) don't seem to like that. This set aside, the upgrade is perfect.

    Hi Vladimir,

I think your insights-ajax.php is broken. It's missing GET options for the newly added modules. Since 0.5 the Ajax search doesn't work anymore and the Search button doesn't work either.

    Hello Vladimir,

Awesome plug-in and very powerful. I'm having the same issues as Harry with the generated static maps not appearing in my posts. Not sure what's going on, but Insight appears to generates the proper code. I checked by copying the code to a blank text file and saving as an html file, which produced the static map. That same code produced by Insight is not generating a map in my WordPress posts? Like Harry I'd like to see dynamic maps, but I'd be more than happy for the static one working. The other features work impeccably well in my opinion.

    Thanks for your hard work,

OK, uninstalled the plugin, re-downloaded it, re-uploaded it, re-activated it but it still doesn't work.

Out of all the plugins I have evaluated recently this is on the only one which doesn't work, at least on my system.

I'm disappointed because it looks so cool and would be very useful.

    Nov 24th, 2008

Whoops! look I've spoken too soon ;-)

Good news is I was able to install and activate the plugin very easily. I was even able to get an api key for the Google map function. Options panel is easy to configure. No problem.

Bad news is it doesn't seem to work by that I mean when I write a new post and type a search string into the Insights panel, and select a radio button, when I hit the 'Search' button nothing actually happens at all.

Is it something to do with JQuery? I'm on OSX here running FF2.

    Ideas:

    1. Ability to add a search engine in the options panel, i.e. my own custom Google search

    2. Amazon would be cool too but would need an option where we could set our localised version, i.e. mine would be .co.uk (not .com)

Hi, thanks for the great plugin. Especially the linking to blog posts is a huge time saver.

The Google maps is easy and nice, but totally inflexible.
    - Could you make it insert dynamic maps instead of static maps? (so including arrow keys, zoomin/out, Hybrid vs map etc)
-Is there a way to add labels to markers?
    - When selecting an inserted map in order it to link it to a page (with a better map), the image disappears (nothing gets linked and teh image/map is lost); bug or regular Wordpress/Googlemaps behaviour?

    Thanks in advance,
    Cheers, Harry

A great plugin, a small suggestion however: is it possible to add automatic accreditation to the photographs you add using insights. Most users on Flickr do not mind you using their photographs, but do want a link back, which i think is only fair. However, now you have to manually add the link. Maybe you could implement something like Photodropper does (a small link and (c) notification beneath every photo added).

You've done it again! Great plugin, I'm sure we'll make use of it.

In testing so far, the Google map won't show up in the preview window if wp_geo (and I'm guessing other Google map plugins) is active. I can't drop wp_geo though, as Insights only inserts an image of the map, not a 'proper' Google map. Now, if version 0.3 could do that...!

Also, it would be good if I could highlight text (a if making a hyperlink) and then have Insights make a link when I find something I want to link to (from my site, Wikipedia, Google) instead of just inserting the hyperlinked phrase [object].

But it really is a great plugin - thanks!

This plug-in is great and will help out many Wordpressers! Have you thought of adding in the option of applying a selectable custom field? I have some sites setup that users (authors) login and create posts, but it is very difficult for them to enter in custom fields such as home_feature_photo or thumbnail, which many themes utilize now. It is easy for many of us that create the sites, but not others. Maybe in the admin area a selectable custom fields drop down, that you can apply to the images? or something like that would be great.
