SEO Friendly Images

SEO Friendly Images is a WordPress optimization plugin which automatically updates all images with proper ALT and TITLE attributes. If your images do not have ALT and TITLE already set, SEO Friendly Images will add them according the options you set. Additionally this makes the post W3C/xHTML valid as well.

ALT attribute is important part of search engine optimization. It describes your image to search engine and when a user searches for a certain image this is a key determining factor for a match.

TITLE attribute play lesser role but is important for visitors as this text will automatically appear in the tooltip when mouse is over the image.

Download

Installation & Usage

  1. Upload the whole plugin folder to your /wp-content/plugins/ folder.
  2. Go to the Plugins page and activate the plugin.
  3. Use the Options page to modify ALT and TITLE options.
  4. You are done, SEO Image does everything else

SEO Friendly Images options recognize two tags %title (post title) and %name (filename of the picture). By combining these two tags and additional words (photo, picture etc..) you can create relevant alt and title tags automatically for all images.

Here is a live example of the plugin (active on my blog). The image that has title and alt replaced with "%title" and "%name %title" respectively resulting in "SEO Friendly Image" for title and "example SEO Friendly Images" for alt.

example.jpg

There is one additional option called 'Override default WordPress alt'. If you uploaded pictures to your blog posts already and haven't specified a description WordPress would automatically add a default alt tag in form of image.jpg. Since SEO Friendly Images replaces only empty or non-existing alt tags, this would be left intact unless this option is turned on.

Love this plugin, but, one MINOR issue...

Only with the Social/Sharing Icons in Google Chrome the script is picking up and inserting `` text into the ALT image description. Then, it picks up this text from the `` and want to include this in the string of text sent to Twitter, for example....

    http://bit.ly/9NnHZH

(look in the address bar to see what it wants to post to Twitter)

This problem only seems to exist in Google Chrome. Explorer, Firefox, and Safari all work well.

    Any ideas?

    Hi,
Just trying this great plugin, but I'm wondering - sometimes I want to put a certain alt tag in myself (or title), to optimise the image more.

Is there a way for the plugin to differentiate between tags I have put in manually) and others?

Maybe a "ignore string" - ie change the alt tag using plugin unless ALT tag begins XYZ ??

    Cheers

    Yeah, I'm a dummy!
All this time I'd been calling the title tag: the alt (alternative text) tag!

( I checked some more images)

Hope I haven't confused anybody - just ignore my last post.
The plugin works exactly as it's supposed to.

Just not to sure what is more important for SEO: the alt or the title of images?

For images the alt tag is more important than title. But title is the next best important thing after alt ;)

Seems like there is some sort of mix-up going on with this plugin:

Although when viewing the source it READS correctly; when you hover over an image it displays the Title, not the Alt description.

    Until Vladimir fixes it:
Just swap the ALT description for Title, and vice-vera.
Everything now displays correctly - except when viewing the source (which is now back to front). This might not be so good because this is what the search engines read!

    HELP!

    Hey me too!

After 1/2 a dozen goes I finally downloaded Version 2.6 from the link on this page - not the image.
Could not get the latest version using automatic upgrade, or from WP.org - kept downloading previous versions.

Vladimir may have forgotten to update some of these links so they do point to the new version?

The latest version of the plugin (2.6) works fine with wordpress 3.0.1. I downloaded the package 4 times to get the correct version ... At first it was still downloading the old version (2.4.4).

    Great plugin,

.....but when i do automatic upgrade....which states that it was successful....

Even after I've just done it.

Any suggestions to fix this issue?

    thx,

I'm getting the same thing, and even after the "plugin successfully upgraded" message I see that I'm still on version 2.4.4 and the ALT attribute is still not overridden by the %title tag, meaning I still have to use a secondary plugin to remove the TITLE attribute.

Any idea if being able to override the WordPress TITLE attribute will be available in a future release?

      • Oct 15th, 2010

I see the problem, and its caused by WordPress not serving the latest version but 2.4.4 for some reason. I've updated the plugin to 2.5.1 so see if that helps.

Override title option will be coming in next update

Just updated the plugin to version 2.5

    * Fixed bug that sometimes prevented overriding the ALT tag
    * Added support for %tags, replacing post tags (thanks Gerben Tiemens!)

Vladimir, you should change your version number in the version chk file. It is still @2.0

Then problem of Steve will probably be solved.

    Hello,

Nice plugin, nice work. Works for me with 3.0.1.

Feature request. A really nice feature would be to extend the %title and %category with the %tag of the post. This enhances all the images to be the same as the post. Which will be nice for google images when you have a photoblog like me. See link of my blog, why :).

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

I'm having a little trouble getting this plugin to work with images that I upload directly to WordPress and then insert in a post. It works fine for pictures that I'm embedding from my Flickr account, but when I upload a picture directly to WordPress, it does not replace the title tag with the title of the post like it does for the alt tag.

For an example, see this test post: http://meganmorris.net/blog/2010/09/21/test-post/

I uploaded the image to WordPress and didn't change the alt or title tags; I simply left them as WordPress automatically created them so the plugin could do the work. While I have the plugin settings to change the ALT attribute to %title and the TITLE attribute to %title as well, you'll see by inspecting that photo that only the ALT attribute has changed.

Am I missing something? Or can you not make the WordPress TITLE attribute change to the title of the post?

    • Sep 22nd, 2010

      Hi Megan

I see both the title and alt tag changed on the image?

      • Megan
        Sep 22nd, 2010

        Hi Vladimir,

Well, I had to install a second plugin to remove the title tag completely, which is what you were seeing. I deactivated that plugin, so if you look now you'll see that the title attribute is not being overridden, despite me telling it to in your plugin.

        Thanks for the help!!
