Smart Youtube WordPress Plugin

Smart Youtube is a WordPress Video plugin that allows you to easily insert videos/playlists into your post, comments and in your RSS feed. The plugin is designed to be small and fast and not use any external resources.

Smart Youtube is one of the most popular WordPress plugins, with more than 1,000,000 downloads.

From version 4.0 Smart Youtube changed the name to Smart Youtube PRO and now also supports playback of Youtube, Vimeo, Metacafe, Liveleak and Facebook high quality videos, works on iPhone&iPad, produces xHTML valid code (unlike YouTube embed code), allows you to view videos in fullscreen, has robust widget support and much more.

The videos will be embedded in your RSS feed as well, and if this is not support by the reader you can choose to have video link and/or video preview screenshot displayed instead.

Main Features

  • Easily embeds YouTube, Vimeo, Metacafe, Liveleak and Facebook videos (normal/HD mode)
  • Works on iPhone, iPad and iPod
  • Embed YouTube playlist (normal/HD)
  • Supports latest high quality video protocols (360p and HD quality 720p)
  • Allows full YouTube customization (colors, border, size, full screen...)
  • Supports video deep linking (starting at desired point with &start=time parameter)
  • Supports migrated blogs from WordPress.com
  • Supports migration from other Youtube plugins such as wp-youtube
  • Extract video thumbnails in your archive/category posts
  • Provides a sidebar widget for videos as well
  • Produces xHTML valid code
  • Very fast and light, no extra scripts needed

Installation & Usage

  1. Upload the whole plugin folder to your /wp-content/plugins/ folder.
  2. Go to the Plugins page and activate the plugin.
  3. Use the Options page to change RSS feed options
  4. When you want to display Youtube video in your post, paste the video link with httpv:// (notice the 'v')

Example: httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00000000

0000000 part is your video REF#

The video will be automatically embedded to your post in the proper way.

If you want to post a high/HD (DVD quality, 720p) quality video you would use httpvh:// ('vh' for video high resolution)

To embed a playlist use extension 'vp' (eg. httpvp://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=528026B4F7B34094)

To use video deep linking just add &start=time parameter at the end of url. For example httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWfksMD4PAg&start=30 will start the video 30 seconds in.

Additionally, you can set how do you want the video to be displayed in your RSS feed. Smart Youtube can show the preview image of the video (automatically grabbed from Youtube), the link to the video, or both. I recommend enabling only the preview image.

am trying to post at the plugin forum, but not having any luck, nothing happens when i click submit new post.

Anyway. . .am having some issues with the plugin, despite it being overly awesome. When i look at a post in google reader at home, it shows the embed, plus the thumbnail. When i look at work, it shows only the thumbnail. Very strange, I have no idea why. Very strange, both using FF3, and I think both are using Flash 10, not sure what other differences there would be.

The problem is that the thumbnail links to youtube. Is there a way to just link the thumbnail to my post? It seems a lot of people are asking this, but I've already read so much, and not seen an answer.

And, I know I've already asked, but if anyone is aware of how to automatically use the thumbnail in your theme, please let me know. I'd like to automatically use thumbnail on homepage, linking to post with embed.

    Thanks vlad + community!

    Hello!

You should add "case 'vh+': $high="&ap=%2526fmt%3D35"; break;" in your code!
There are four quality-modes on youtube right now: Standard, High Quality (fmt18), High Quality + (fmt35) and 720p (fmt22).

An example for fmt35 is one of my videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsC0iIDUu4Q&fmt=35
Youtube plays the fmt35 version instead of the fmt18 when you click on the HQ-button in this video!

    Greetz ;)

    hi vlad,

i just noticed that my RSS has a thumbnail image, and when someone clicks it, it goes to youtube.

    1) how can i use this thumbnail for frontpage instead of rss???
    2) how can i make the thumbnail in rss go to post instead of youtube???

    thanks!

Hey Vlad! Is there any way to change the embed code so that when someone clicks on the player they are NOT taken to the YouTube site, but instead to a different URL that I could specify?

hi again vlad, thanks for the response
so far the plugin rocks, been waiting for this

anyway, in response to your response, if the thumbnail is pulled directly from youtube, is there a way using this plugin, to automatically put an image on the homepage, but the embedded video on the post page? i just want to link a movie in a post, and then if you view the post on the homepage, you see an image, clicking it takes you to the post page, where you see the movie. that would be amazing functionality, never seen something like it and been looking.

    thanks a lot!!

hey, loving the plugin, just a quick question,
in the settings, at the very bottom, there is an option to display video preview image in RSS feed. Where does this preview come from? I've been looking for a plugin which can automatically create a preview image for the frontpage for a long time.

    Thanks Vlad!

Finally figured it out. For those of you having the same problem (videos in posts that automatically redirect to YouTube page), just highlight the YouTube URL in the admin panel for the post and click the Unlink icon. I'm sure Vladimir says something about that somewhere but I missed it. Whew! Problem solved.

Vladimir, thanks as always for your bug fixes. Any idea why the videos in my posts go directly over to YouTube in Google Chrome and Firefox? This doesn't seem to happen in Internet Explorer. It's very frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Jim

A title for the widget would be a good addition to this fabulous plugin.

Also, am I the only one? I can't get HTML codes to work in the widget.

    I'm on Smart Youtube 3.1.1 and IE6

In addition to my comment a couple of days ago, when you play the videos in posts on Google Chrome and now Firefox, they take you over to YouTube. This does not happen in IE. The video in the sidebar is fine. This only applies to videos in posts. PLEASE HELP! It's driving me nuts. LOL

    Thanks, Jim

Excellent Plugin! I'm new to blogging and was found your plugin, installation was easy and it only took me a few minutes to get the syntax down for my posts.

    Keep up the good work!

    Great plugin!

I'm wondering though, if there is the capability to customize the size in different posts. In other words, one size in one post and another size in another post...

Still the same problem as stated few months ago:

Tthe plugin is causing the known "Operation Aborted" error in IE6 & 7. The page stops loading when my blog post

    Thank you.

Same problem as Nick but only in Google Chrome. When I click on the video it takes me to YouTube. Is there a fix for this? It's been working fine for almost 2 months. Now, all of a sudden, it's not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Jim

Having a title for the widgets is a must. I have two videos on my wordpress that are side by side and user do not know what each video is about. Other than that, very happy with the plugin!

    @ Nick
Just visited your site using Firefox version 3.0.10 and the plugin worked just fine whether clicking the play button or that stupid in your face play button in the middle of the video.

    Happy Trails...

    Hi,
Thank you for the plugin. I was wondering what code would I put in the video template for video appearance if I want to center the video in my post column? Thanks. Im a real beginner, by the way!

This post has a video in it: http://girlreturnshome.com/psalm-23-for-babies-daddies/?preview=true&preview_id=1913&preview_nonce=ee33169c5f
