Smart Youtube WordPress Plugin

Smart Youtube is a WordPress Video plugin that allows you to easily insert videos/playlists into your post, comments and in your RSS feed. The plugin is designed to be small and fast and not use any external resources.

Smart Youtube is one of the most popular WordPress plugins, with more than 1,000,000 downloads.

From version 4.0 Smart Youtube changed the name to Smart Youtube PRO and now also supports playback of Youtube, Vimeo, Metacafe, Liveleak and Facebook high quality videos, works on iPhone&iPad, produces xHTML valid code (unlike YouTube embed code), allows you to view videos in fullscreen, has robust widget support and much more.

The videos will be embedded in your RSS feed as well, and if this is not support by the reader you can choose to have video link and/or video preview screenshot displayed instead.

Main Features

  • Easily embeds YouTube, Vimeo, Metacafe, Liveleak and Facebook videos (normal/HD mode)
  • Works on iPhone, iPad and iPod
  • Embed YouTube playlist (normal/HD)
  • Supports latest high quality video protocols (360p and HD quality 720p)
  • Allows full YouTube customization (colors, border, size, full screen...)
  • Supports video deep linking (starting at desired point with &start=time parameter)
  • Supports migrated blogs from WordPress.com
  • Supports migration from other Youtube plugins such as wp-youtube
  • Extract video thumbnails in your archive/category posts
  • Provides a sidebar widget for videos as well
  • Produces xHTML valid code
  • Very fast and light, no extra scripts needed

Installation & Usage

  1. Upload the whole plugin folder to your /wp-content/plugins/ folder.
  2. Go to the Plugins page and activate the plugin.
  3. Use the Options page to change RSS feed options
  4. When you want to display Youtube video in your post, paste the video link with httpv:// (notice the 'v')

Example: httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00000000

0000000 part is your video REF#

The video will be automatically embedded to your post in the proper way.

If you want to post a high/HD (DVD quality, 720p) quality video you would use httpvh:// ('vh' for video high resolution)

To embed a playlist use extension 'vp' (eg. httpvp://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=528026B4F7B34094)

To use video deep linking just add &start=time parameter at the end of url. For example httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWfksMD4PAg&start=30 will start the video 30 seconds in.

Additionally, you can set how do you want the video to be displayed in your RSS feed. Smart Youtube can show the preview image of the video (automatically grabbed from Youtube), the link to the video, or both. I recommend enabling only the preview image.

I'm having problems with Firefox also. With IE it works fine, but in Firefox, when I click the play button, the player disappears and shows "Error 404 - Not Found".

    I disabled all Firefox extensions.

    ok I finally got it...

when you go to write a new post
start writing and when you get to the place where you want to add your video, I say video here, you can say anything you want, I select the text and click the create link icon from the text tool bar at the top and a window opens for me to place the code into. when you do that be sure it looks like this

    httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00000000
be sure to make sure the 0000000 part is YOUR VIDEO REF#

    and it works
    GREAT
but this took me several tries before my brain unfroze
hope it works out for you...

When the plugin does not work it is usually some kind of mis-typing or using http://uk.youtube.com instead of http://www.youtube.com

The correct format to type it in your post is this:

    httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWfksMD4PAg

if it still does not work you probably have some post alternating plugin that is messing the embed video code. Try disabling plugins one by one until you find which one is it.

    Doesn't work for me.
I am using wordpress 2.5 (on my own web server, not wordpress)
and the latest version of your pluging 1.22.

It puts in the following code in my html

    <a title="guano" href="

It shows the preview, but when I click on play I get:
The requested URL /jack/<span class= was not found on this server.

I don't see the class "youtube" defined anywhere.

Am I missing a piece of something

Could you post an example of what the code is supposed to look like please?

Just pick any YouTube video and paste the html. Are we supposed to use the standard YouTube code and just add the "v" ?

Yes just center the link in order for video to be centered.

I had the same issue as many above.

    The Fix -

Do not copy exact link, make sure it starts with www.
    My video started with http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=BqkMV4xg0LA
I changed it to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqkMV4xg0LA and it worked and still forwarded to the proper video?
adding in the "v" of course

It was the www missing in the "link" area on youtube

    Hope this helps someone?

what about centering? Do I just center the link?

    thanks

    Jeff

Just update the options on the options screen, no matter if there stay the correct values.

You paste the code to visual editor.

Yeah it is set at that by default. Still no go. Am I supposed to be putting the link in the 'code' or the 'visual' box? I really really apologise but I am a blog rookie so I'm still learning.

    Thanks again ,

Same deal as the above guys, and only plug in I have running is akismet and ultimate tag warrior. Type in link and no youtube. Is there anything else that has to be turned on or off for it to work?

Thanks for the help in advance.

I'm having the same issues as described above: After upgrading from v1.1 to the latest version (1.2 by the time of this post) all my videos disappeared from my blog. Since I cannot find any hints on how to fix this error I hope that it's going to be fixed any time soon. Except for one SEO plugin I don't have any other third party plugin running.

    Hi there!

I have a little problem and hope you can help. I did as instructed per your instructions. For example:

    httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izPyK8506X4

When I went to preview my video, it shows exactly what I typed above exactly as you see it...no video, just the typing. Is there something else I need to do?
